Teaching 'How many_____' to kids:
Yesterday, I was teaching my kids these questions and answers-
How many trees are there? There's one tree. / There are three trees.
How many trees can you see? One/ Three.
I was also teaching simple prepositions, such as, in/on/under/by
e.g. Where is the ball? It's on the table.
so we combined these with our 'how many___questions'
-How many balls are in the basket? Ans. numbers
then after that we played our 'How many taps/beat can you hear?
We used a bucket as our drum,
then one student( our it) taps the drum using the number from one - ten,
then the other guess the numbers of the tap. It went like this:
Teacher: I'll be the first to tap the bucket ok?
How many taps can you hear? tap, tap, tap
Students: Three
then one of the students said," I want to do it!"
everybody had their chance to tap the 'drum'.
You might enjoy how kids can create different patterns of sound/beat by using only the number of taps.
Textbooks: Let's Go Series.
Games: When it comes to games, honestly I don't often use the ones in the textbooks,
I always try to think of games which is related to what we are learning at the moment.

                                         Tools in Teaching

I was asked one day, what tools do I use in teaching. Do I use projector, computer, DVDs, and so on and so on.
Then I remember when I was studying TEFL, I was given a project where I should choose tools to use for teaching, then I tried my best to think what tools to use, then I wrote techniques in using them. My mentor told me that I suggested really good techniques, BUT what he told me was my 'eye opener', he said, "Christine, you have made good suggestions, but what if you are teaching in a place where your ONLY tools are blackboard and chalks, and sometimes maybe ONLY papers and pencils?"...
What he said made me realized that 'yes' living here makes it easy to get not so expensive tools, so I use computer and printer a lot for teaching. BUT what if I don't have these things? NOT even textbooks?
Then I thought about my own experience as a student, you see I ( I will say 'I' here) relied on listening to my teachers' teaching, and my best second teacher was the blackboard, I copied all the details written on it. I had my scrap notes where I wrote basically everything, and when I get home I would properly write my notes on their respective notebooks.

I am writing this now because with my students, I often explain words, phrases or grammar using our  board, and we use our notebooks a lot, hoping that in the future they would realized the importance of writing, and of course the use of notebooks.
Just my thought for today.

                         Simpson Game
November 8th, 2013

When I was a child, I remember playing 'Simpson, Simpson give a name of a....' ( Do you know this game?) Anyway, I use this game now to teach nouns, once you remember the rhythm in which I can't show here...hmmm maybe one of these days, but it's just like a bit of rapping, it's really FUN!

it's easy, choose a noun ( common noun e.g. animals, food, fruits, and so on
sometimes I use brand names of.. e.g. shoes then kids can say Adidas, Nike, etc..last night we use the shops' name of a department store)

And the song goes like this-
(The first it will sing this) Simpson, Simpson give a name of an animal,
animal, animal can not be repeated anymore
                                     for example, dog
-then each student has to say an animal word, until somebody can't say an animal word anymore, then he/ she will be the next it, and the 'it' has to change the noun.
